This is retrievable with recovery software. Even fragments remaining on a disk may possibly impact your privacy and security at a later date. While software programs delete data that you no longer require, it is not immediately entirely deleted. Even later, it may still be recoverable - anything can be recovered until it is completely overwritten. You must take extra steps to erase sensitive data that is left behind. The Overwrite utility uses the operating system to overwrite the remaining data and metadata to fully prevent data recovery.
When your operating system deletes a file, the space it fills becomes marked as free space - that is, free to be used by new files. However, both data and metadata being deleted is still present and can be recovered right up until the 'empty' space is actually overwritten by new data.
