Closed Money. I removed the G: stick drive and launched Money again. It could not find the file so I asked it to restore the back up which it did while renaming it back to Money. I then exited Money and relaunched and it opened the correct file from Documents. The key to this, for whatever reason, in my particular case is using task manager to shut Money and loading from the stick drive.
Thank you for your help Glyn. Just got Money working on Windows 7 X Prior to changing the compatibility mode Money just hung at the end of the update process. Hopefully this will help folks out. When I closed Money it didn't save anything. I would like to thank everyone for their help. I was using Windows 7 bit and found my file would not work without an update. As other posters have mentioned running money using the right click run as administrator seems to work perfectly.
It is a great pity that Microsoft I'm not continuing to develop this product. I have opened a new ms money file in Windows 7, but every time I restore backup from my XP computer money closes and reopens without restoring the back up.
Can you please advice? Not knowing the version of Money means there could be a couple of solutions. If you're running Money , then I would check if you have the patched version of Money it will have a version ending If you're wanting to copy an old file from one machine to another, I'd not use the backup and instead copy the MNY file over and just try to open that.
You can also try to create a new file - does this work okay this is to establish whether it's an installation or file issue? I have a friend who is not very computer literate who has been using msmoney for some time on an old Fujitsu win 98 home edition and now has a new pc a Dell inspiron with win 7 home 64 bit and wishes to continue using money. I tried to load his msmoney but it is not recognised.
I have no experience of Msmoney or any of the foibles associated with it. Would appreciate advice and help from any of you Money experts. When you say 'not recognised', do you mean running the program or the data file. Did you install the program correctly to both machines. What versions of the sofwtare are you using? Thanks for your response Glynn. The version of Money is 2.
When I tried to load it into his system from his original discs and run the set up that is when it says it does not recognise it. I will have to get the disc off him and see if My Vista system can run from his original disc or is the disc in trouble as his MSMONEY that I copied to my remote disc I did by a direct cable link copy from his win 98 hard disc to my remote disc.
Glynn, Thanks for your response. I will go back to my friends PC and try again with Money and clearly note all problems experienced and get back here. The incompaitibility could be down to the fact that it needs to run in 'compatibility mode'.
See this article on compatibility mode for more information. You may need to run the setup program this way too. If this doesn't work, on some versions of Windows 7 you can use XP Mode, which is a virtual machine within Windows 7. You might be able to run that version in there. Glyn, Have tried again with compatibility set to win 98 and run as administrator.
Or am I missing a trick somewhere. Hmm, all Money versions are 32 bit. Saying that, I am running 32 bit money on 64 bit windows 7 but this is money plus. Have you tried the properties option and selecting Windows 95 at all?
I've not really got too many solutions for the version which is almost 20 years old! Thanks Glyn, It would appear from efforts todate to forget sorting this and leaves options of obtain a later version of Money or as Money is now defunct moving to something current and being supported and looks as if Quicken is the obvious candidate for my friend. Quicken is very different. In fact, I think everything is quite different to Money 2.
You could buy Quicken, or perhaps get Money Plus Sunset edition for free see my website for some links for that. There are a number of other packages too, but I have no experience of the others.
If he changes product, things are likely to be a lot different though Hi all Pleased to find this forum. Just trying to get all my old Vista applications on to Windows 7 32 bit. All good except for MS Money [box says c ].
It was fine in Vista and is apparently compatible with W7 but I can't get any compatibility setting to get it to instal. INF file is missing or corrupt. Well this is the orginal disk so nothing can be either corrupt or missing. Tried running as Administrator, uninstalling antivirus, etc, as suggested on another foum. Wondered if anyone had any ideas here pls? All thoughts welcome. Thx in advance! Glyn, Once again thanks for your input however, not being a user of Money but helping someone else I am a little confused or being stupid.
On looking at your site as to what he would actually need there does not appear to indicate a UK version and indicate them as US versions. Does this mean they work in Dollars only or does it handle multiple currencies? I am not sure what I am looking for and where to look for the right thing. You further refer to free download. Are you referring to it being free as a product or is it just the down load that is free because it is a trial and then one has to activate and pay for a license.
Sorry if I am being a pain but think I need further advice and guidance in resolving my friends problem. Hi Geoff Multiple currencies are supported. You can choose your 'base' currency as you wish. The Sunset version is free.
And by free, I mean you will not have to pay, ever, for it. However there is no support from Microsoft. One thing you could try is to copy the complete contents of the CD to your hard drive, and install from there. I would also go with the running as administrator option, but to do this, right click on the 'setup.
I only have one annoying problem that I cannot find any answer to. When I installed the update to all the dates were then flipped to show in the US format, i. Month, day, year. I cannot find any way to switch back to the UK date format of day, month, year. It's driving be nuts but at least I have it up and running I suppose - Accountz software, as a UK alternative was a nightmare and I abandoned it after a wasted day!
Help please. Fred Waters, UK. You can set the format to United Kingdom in there. My computer died and I need to get a new one. Does Money standard install on Windows 7?
I have a lot of financial data. Is there a way to tranfer the data later to another program like Quicken? Hi Jeff P you should be able to run Money on Windows 7.
If you're in the US, you could also upgrade it to the Money Sunset sku as well, should you want to. Hi the fact that it says it's upgrading the file may point to Money and your file being from differing versions. If you right click on the msmoney. Don't open your file but create a new one in your documents area. This will at least establish if your file or Money is the issue. If it's Money, then reinstall with admin privileges which means using the 'run as administrator' trick above.
If it's the file, the I'd first try another backup and secondly i'd ask if you have definitately got the correct version of Money installed for the file you have. I've read several posts, and understand their are problems with MS Money in Windows 7. I have Money 98 - am I right in thinking that when I upgrade to Windows 7 I have no chance of using again?
Absolutely not. There are certainly problems, but its not insurmountable. I've had Money 1 and Money 95 working on Windows 7 myself. If you have a version of Win 7 with Windows XP mode, then that is also an option. Glyn, Like others that have posted here, I have a new Windows 7 machine and have installed MS Money and cannot restore my backup file from my old Windows XP machines hard drive. I have tried all the suggestions already posted, however, the program is asking for a password to open the backup file.
I have never used a password and confirmed that with a password recovery program that stated the file is not password protected. Any ideas??? PS: Thanks for all of your efforts to help the lost sheep!! I have loaded Money v Any advice would be appreciated.
Hi Ben the trick is also that you need to open a new file. This should then upgrade and sort it out. See also Article and Article for safety in future. I use Microsoft Money on my laptop with Vista. I just bought a new laptop with Windows 7. I installed Microsoft Money on it no problem. The problem comes when I try to restore a backup to transfer the files from my old laptop to the new one.
I've created a backup file on my flash drive and tried doing a restore backup on the new laptop, but can't seem to get the file to load. Any suggestions? Hi Anonymous. This is quite a common problem and is to do with an un-updated version of Money See this page. Michael try creating a new file in Money first, to determine if it's a file or program issue.
Hello, Not sure if this has been addressed already. This causes an error message to pop up that this operation cannot be performed as well as other erros the wording of which I cannot recall now - effectively saying that the latest changes cannot be saved.
I have tried running the. Not sure if I should be doing something else. Hi this is familiar, but I've not heard of the error for maybe 5 or more years, and so my memory of it is hazy. In the event of any "operation cannot be performed" errors, I would always recommend a repair on the file on the tools menu. Secondly, turn off auto backup and check it exits cleanly - the idea is to see if it's the saving of the backup which is the issue.
Thirdly, try saving to a new location without compression, if you've got the option to do that. And finally, make sure you're saving to somewhere like your 'My Documents' folder and not in 'Program Files'. Don't forget, Money can save in multiple places, so check all of the file paths are valid. Hi Glyn, Thanks for the response. A few points: - I am not sure how to perform a repair. I can see the Tools menu but no command seems to be relevant. Can you provide more detail on the steps that need to be taken?
Can you please explain? Not sure if this gives any clues. Will keep an eye on it and return with news. Many thanks for your time and help. Hi Glyn Am hoping you might be able to help I have read your blog and after 3 days finally managed to get ms money loaded onto a laptop and be able to open it!
However I cannot restore my back up file The old laptop has died and I desperately need to access my data again. Regards chris. Hi Chris try opening Money on it's own, rather than the file and see if you can create a new file.
Any error messages at all? The compression options are in there. This is also the place to check that it is trying to save to valid locations When Money closes down, it does a few more things when shutting down before it is fully closed. If you reopen during this time, you can get errors. No matter what information or template I use, it prints out the sample invoice.
Please help! Hi Glyn. I Have read previous posts and can never recall upgrading or updating my version of money Weird one, that is. Works sometimes gave you a version later than you might have expected. Also, are you installing a different country version to what you had before? I've published the article about invoices, but I am not sure of the answer on it, sorry. Hopefully someone else may provide a clue. My only guess would be something to do with administrator mode - try running Money as an administrator and see whether it can find your custom invoices.
However it can not read my datafile. It reports: "Money can't open this file because it was created with a different version of Money". I have also found trial versions of , and all USA only language packs but they all have exactly the same problem. Are you aware of any work around? Thanks Rowan. Hi Glyn, Problems still persist. Now, every few days, it is not possible to enter any new transactions get a message along the lines "The transaction cannot be entered".
I have to create a new file, restore from backup and continue. Hi Rowan, yes, your thoughts are correct. You can't open a version of Money from a different regional version, so an NZ one can't be opened by the Sunset version, as that is a US version.
Hi Bamboozled. If not, now's the time. If, after running this you continually get problems, then perhaps it's prudent to consider exporting the data and then reimporting it into a new file. From the sound of things, there is corruption in the file, and if a repair doesn't solve it, transaction export and import may be the cleanest way to go forward. I've just responded to another poster on this article. It might be a reasonably short article see here , but it can be time consuming.
See this page then. I can't remember which versions had what options, but this should help you. After several minutes of waiting I can perform functions again, but only for a matter of seconds before the program freezes again. Our hard drive crashed. Installed a new hard dricve. Reinstalled Money then went to restore the backup. Have Money on a CD backup file Any ideas what is going on?
Please help anyone!!!! Hi there before you try and restore your backup, make sure you have the patch see this page. Once you have the patch, you can try to either a use the MNY file straight off or b restore the backup. In either case, put the file in the "my documents" or "documents" folder before starting the software with the file.
Hi Rick - have you tried a repair on the file at all? Thanks for your input. Can you dumb it down or direct me to a youtube video that shows it step by step. Not really.
