It can be quite annoying when an app from the App Store cannot be loaded and thus updated. The download or update is started, but only a fraction of the app is loaded after hours.
Or an app like Overcast cannot be installed because the download does not start even though you are connected to the internet. By the way, other problems and errors can occur which you can find in the overview of all Overcast problems find. Many then desperately try to restart the download of Overcast, but this does not lead to any useful result either. Unless your car has WiFi, that download will be using your cell phone data every Wednesday.
I recommend turning off Auto Download altogether. Instead, turn on the notification setting for new episodes. This means that your phone will tell you when a new episode of your subscribed podcast s is available, and then you have the choice to download it when you want and are on WiFi. In a podcast player, the warning comes up when you try to stream or download an episode using data. Overcast Apple only, works with Apple Watch. Adjusting your settings in Apple Podcasts is tricky, but well worth your time.
To turn off Cellular Data, tap the toggle switch to turn it to white which indicates that the setting is turned off. To turn on Only Download on Wi-Fi, tap the toggle switch to turn it to green which indicates that the setting is turned on. This screen will show you all podcasts to which you are subscribed.
Tap the toggle button to turn notifications on or off. Within each show, you have more settings options. Personally I tend to use Tune In Radio, though there are still plenty of options out there. Everything here has clearly been the result of a lot of podcast listening, and the result is an app that does everything you want to do without unnecessary features or unnecessary fuss.
The benefits of adding a show via RSS have become immediately clear. Being a subscriber to a show and getting early access episodes and bonus material right in my podcast manager makes it so easy to stay up with all my shows. The clip function has made it so much more effective to get friends interested in shows than years of recommending downloads ever did.
The less amount of time I have to spend poking around in menus, the better. I found out where continuous play is, and you have to add episodes to allow them to play or something? Still believe the app is not intuitive, and could really benefit from a touch-screen walkthrough when first installed and opened.
